Chinese title of this exhibition is borrowed from the geological term ‘asthenosphere’, which refers to a deformable and ductile physical environment consisting of a mixture of solids and melting at an average depth of between 70 and 220 km below ground. The boundaries of the asthenosphere are not well defined and and not clearly separated from the lithosphere with a gradual transition. This indeterminate stratigraphic state implicitly reflects some of the pivotal elements of the artist’s work, namely the alchemical integration and synthesis of different materials and the reorganisation and reconstruction of incompatible temporal and spatial scales. These traces of deviation and overlap between geological allegory and supposedly real events manifest the contingency and stochastic nature of the recorded history. Their ambiguous forms in the works very often represent deliberately framed transitory states, temporary appearances and eternal moments in the midst of certain changes. The artist captures and embraces the natural and technological objects that move between the extreme macroscopic and microscopic scales with poetic fossils and relics. The moment of birth and death appears slow and imminent in this solidified sculptural state, indicating a further entanglement between time, history and living creatures. The ecological fictions embodied in the sculptures and moving images suggest a non-human planetary context, where evolution, infection, parasitism and mutation are central to the narrative, and the metaphors of decay that emerge from the ever-changing materiality of the creative process manifest complex relationship between human society and technology as it evolves. The artist is fascinated by time, and by examining the multiple trajectories of the co-evolution of animals, plants, fungi and minerals, she seeks to resituate human existence from a historical future light falls through the industrial window panes of Shuyi Cao’s Brooklyn studio, making the sun-bleached exoskeleton of the horseshoe crab she holds appear translucent. “There’s no meat left,” she says, “it’s like a ghost.” Ghosts, or the traces of living, moving things, abound in Cao’s space: dried seed pods, sea shells foraged from shorelines and shellfish dinners, coprolites (fossilised manure), driftwood and pebbles smoothed by the tide. She picks them up and handles them gently. “The things I collect, I don’t always know whether they are alive or dead.” She shows me a milkweed pod that had erupted into floss after sitting in the studio for months, seemingly lifeless. With a shake, Cao sends silken gossamer dancing through the still air. Even what we call inanimate things have charges, weights. They are attracted to each other or repulse each other. They have force and velocity, heat and viscosity. They fall down, rise up. They form into clouds and then disappear into thin air. [1] For archaeologist Ian Hodder, things are “just stages in the process of the transformation of matter”; Cao’s collection and treatment of the objects she finds testifies to the endless vacillation between petrification and fluidity that defines our material world. [2] In Milkweed (2025), Cao blows up the reawakened seed casing to Jurassic scale, using digital scans and 3D printing to reimagine the papery husks in steel, hand painted lilac-grey. Each pod is a vessel for a milk-white filament structure of borosilicate glass: an arrested form of the plant’s latex sap, or a calcified skeleton of the floss that sends milkweed seeds adrift. The attenuated prongs of Wind Claw (2025) take their shape from the seed capsules of the Devil’s Claw, a propagation mechanism that evolved to encircle and snag the feet of Ice Age megafauna. Now, the claws hold an emptiness at their core: the negative space for something that used to exist. Movement is stilled, for the time being. But one can never really be certain that there is not a kernel of life left over; of something that continues to wriggle and grow. The shells that Cao grafts to driftwood and steel in her Xenophora sculptures must be cleaned after they’re gathered. She soaks the turret-like shells of sea-snails in water for days, and dries them in the sun before polishing them, mimicking the erosion enacted by the sea. Sometimes a morsel of meat escapes this process, and Cao finds maggots hiding inside the whorls. She starts the cleaning again. The artist’s family and friends save the shells for her after they eat sea snails, clams or oysters; Xenophora I and II (both 2024) are inscribed with eating practices that stretch from New York to China. Aptly, Cao describes the preparatory elements of her practice in metabolic terms. She consumes leftovers proffered by her environment and relationships, digesting them through physical and digital treatment processes: cleaning, drying, scanning, grafting, printing and painting are her enzymes. Dried mango peel becomes a spiny shell casing; shards of discarded Evian bottles look like butterfly wings. Cao’s collecting and making practice establishes her sculptures as participants in the human ecosystem that connects the self with the city. Things are consumed and their remnants are discarded or excreted, making their way back into the environmental fabric to break down or lie dormant – maybe to be picked up and used again. A portion of Cao’s materials come from Dead Horse Bay in Brooklyn, the site of a horse processing plant in the 19th century, before becoming a landfill from the 1920s to the 1950s. Now, it is a place where thick green glass from mid-century beer bottles mingles with chunks of horse bone and plastic waste, an amalgam of organic and synthetic material bound together by its shared, interminable survival. In Of Shape Offshore (2023), Cao films miniature landscapes formed from reconstituted material collected from the bay, turning “that which the sea rejects” into fictional topographies that pulsate and glow like bacteria under a microscope. Things get associated with each other as they move through common life-histories, at times leading to joint discard – all the parts of a meal, or all the sweepings from around a hearth, or all the contents of a room or house discarded together. Things are mixed in middens and land-fills. Things may be further mixed together as flesh rots, buildings decay, roofs collapse, and as deposits are washed down slopes. [3] What will we look like as left-over life forms? In Begin with the End of What Comes Before (2024), Cao uses a mixture of hand-modelled digital animation and AI generation to imagine our future remains: scorched mountain ranges, bruise-coloured rock formations, mycelial passageways slick with chemical secretion. We often think about archaeology as a thread of connection between us and the deep past: sherds from before the Common Era, or Bronze Age arrowheads. The sculptures are created with material residues collected from the Brooklyn Dead Horse Bay - an abandoned beach, a historically designated location for processing dead animals and urban waste and a former landfill. For decades, animal remains and detritus of objects buried half a century ago have been reappearing at the shoreline of Dead Horse Bay as part of the exposure of landfill due to climate change, storm erosion, and rising sea levels. The area was closed in 2020 as radioactive matter was detected among human artifacts. With sculptures that fossilize the present, the reconstructed archipelago of decaying remnants symbolizes the sedimented debris layers of our vast compressed contemporary lives and deaths. The video unravels a speculative cosmology meditating on the earth's history, geotrauma, and queer pluralism of our ancestry. shallow seas billions of years ago, to supporting structures for genetic material and metabolism in living organisms; from teeth and bones gradually emerging inside soft-bodied organisms to the first group of vertebrates venturing onto land; from phosphorite deposits formed by the accumulation of petrified remains to the continuous seepage and return of mining waste in geological strata. It begins with the biological evolution driven by the competition for phosphorus in the Cambrian oceans and continues with the extraction, mining, transformation, and exile of phosphorus in the human era. These two threads intertwine in sculptural form, revealing the unfathomable entanglement of ancient kinship and alienating residues in deep time. In the process of conceiving the artwork, the artist traveled to Weng'an, Guizhou, to visit a fossil group preserving primitive life from 600 million years ago through phosphate mineralization. In the same region, phosphate ore and solid waste phosphogypsum accumulated from tailings were collected for a series of material experiments. Foram series is drawn from the single-celled marine planktonic organism foraminifera, which has been living in the open ocean since the Cambrian period. They are capable of secreting calcium or silica to form shells, and their remains contribute to the formation of thick layers of chalk, limestone, and reefs. As one of the oldest protists, their inorganic bodies hold clues to climate and ecological changes. The original sculptures are digitally modeled based on machine learning-generated hybrid foram species and then recreated through 3D printing, mold-making and casting, assembling, and hand sculpting single-channel video with sounds, 33 minutes 52 seconds This experimental documentary situated its historical context within the Khorezmian Archaeological-Ethnographic Expedition of the USSR in Kyzylkum and Karakum deserts in Central Asia (1937-1991). It was the biggest and the longest in the USSR, and a thousand archaeological sites were found and recorded. Now these are the territories of Uzbekistan (Karakalpakstan), Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. As a large-scale science project, it served the general Soviet ideological, colonial and industrialisation agenda in Central Asia. The archaeologists, through their innovative interdisciplinary collaboration with soil scientists and geomorphologists, alongside decades of extensive aerial surveying of ancient irrigation systems, involuntarily catalyzed the partial diversion of rivers, the development of hydroelectric facilities, and ultimately, the tragic vanishing of the Aral Sea. The desert took over, the expedition stopped, its story and huge archive dusted, and the empire collapsed. Departing from this background, the film explores the possibilities of reconstruction - the reconstruction of topographies, civilizations, personal and collective memories, the psychological and physical restoration from ecological trauma. She from the Sky, 2025.Commissioned and produced by GES-2 House of Culture.Photo: Anna Zavozyaeva ---- Excerpt from the curatorial text by&nbsp;Katerina Chuchalina: She from the Sky was created especially for the project Split Together, Merged Apart, following a trip to Uzbekistan, the Aral Sea, and the sites of the Khorezm Expedition.&nbsp; Shuyi Cao’s film is constructed as a collage and interchange between the voices of archaeologists, ichthyologists, economists, and ecologists. The range of questions and themes of these conversations seems to outline the contour of possibilities for rational understanding of the catastrophe that destroyed the aquatic ecosystem of the region and led to the disappearance perimeter of these possibilities. The artist explores the grey zone of non-scientific knowledge and myth, testing her hypothesis that the mythologizing of catastrophic events is an ancient psychological mechanism offering a way to make sense of climate change. The knowledge of local people about water is a mix of Zoroastrian myths left over from the ancient Khorezmians and beliefs characteristic of the local Karakalpak culture. In the film, fragments of conversations with people of the twenty-first century are interspersed with lines from the Avesta - the collection of Zoroastrian sacred texts. A third layer is taken from Andrei Platonov’s story Soul (1935), in which a Soviet economist returns to his homeland in Turkmenistan to help his people find happiness. The setting of Platonov’s text partly coincides with the sites where the Khorezm Expedition carried out its excavations and with the scope of Soviet reclamation projects: people, animals, and plants wander in the Amu Darya delta, the Sarykamysh depression, the Karakul desert, across the Ustyurt plateau, and the Shiva oasis. For Platonov, geographical concepts are not just a background to the story - they are its characters. The deseret - “a wind-whipped sea of unpeopled sands” - becomes a place of existential overcoming and collective struggle for communism and mastery of a hostile element. They are then cast into aqua-resin, embedding debris of fauna, flora, and human activities spanning various timescales, including minerals, shells, petrified woods, and man-made artifacts. The patterns of imperfect repetition and unconformity within the sculpture represent the recording devices of the Earth as repositories for nonlinguistic inscription. &nbsp;
